WRITERS TOOLS AND LINKS

by
Douglas L. Simmons

I will continue to post articles as topics come to mind, and I find that any experience I may have had might be helpful to others if shared.

However, there are many subjects concerning the craft of writing, which I am unable to properly address.

Others have already (in much greater detail and with far more authority) written volumes of excellent advice. Rather than attempt to speak out of turn, I have listed links to those writers pages.

In addition, there are links to educational sites, where you may find a plethora of literary knowledge...especially (if you want to become a writer) the "Big Three"...spelling, grammar and style.

You may never get past this first link; you can find everything a writer needs at this site:

Should you decide to post your own web page (if you have a book published on the Internet a web page is a very good idea) here are some helpful suggestions for creating and promoting your page.

Writers Guide To The Internet Home Page

This is a good resource, especially note the "Article Of The Month". There is a good piece on outlining your novel.

  • Licia Rasley's Writers' Corner

Within these pages you will find a virtual wealth of information detailing many aspects of writing and publishing.

Here is a FreeWare program for manipulating images (a necessity if you are designing your own book covers) which is a great addition to the imaging programs that came with your copy of Windows. You can manipulate many image files (including gif's) that are not accessible with "Paint" or "Imagining". Ifran View

Here is an excellent site where writers can teach and learn:

This is a cozy little web ring comprised of 14 sites, all of which pertain to writing.

  • Writers Workshop Web

A young fellow named "Bobkatt" ask about posting his writing on the Internet for others to read. I located this site for him and believe it to be a good place for young writers to get exposure of their work while gaining experience in publishing on the Internet and, perhaps, getting some useful criticism.

    Free Story Center

There was a treasure we all possessed back in early childhood. One which (as soon as testing was completed and report cards had been approved by our parents) we immediately lost within the hard stony recesses of our quickly fossilizing brains. A treasure which we often lament the loss of, as--hoping to someday become writers--we wander the deserts of the blank white page, turning over the rocks of memory, searching for,"The Elements Of Style".

    A Grammar Toolkit

    grammar:
    1. The system of inflections, word order, and word formation of a language.
    2. The system of rules that allows the speakers of a language to create sentences.
    3. A set of rules setting forth the current standard of usage in a language.
    4. Writing or speech judged in relation to this set of rules.)

Needle In A Cyberstack: The Info Finder is another useful site for writers.

    The "Web-Ster" of them all:
    WWWebsters Dicitonary Search Screen.

    Rhyming - Open Directory Project

This site goes far beyond being just a dictionary...it has just about every search tool a writer might need. Research-It!

Here is a very useful tool to use in your search for that right word or phrase. I use it to the extent that I have installed one on many of my web pages. It combines a dictionary, a thesaurus, or the entire web, in a simple ask and submit form...

    Dictionary.com

...and if you can't find it there, check out these Search Tools....

...and (unless I find something really extraordinary) this is the last search engine listing I will include here. If reality becomes a bit much, check out: Freeality Internet Search....

...and then came something really extraordinary: Dictionaries and Thesauri....

...and in our constant search for better writing tools, what would the world be without Coolnerds....

...OK! Just this one more, and then we'll call it "Spaghetti Soup".... or something....

I will attempt to update this book as I develope my own craft and encounter lessons which may be of assistance to others.

Thank you for taking from your precious time the moments needed to read...and keep my thoughts alive.

An astute writer once advised all readers: "If you are reading and come upon a word which you do not know the meaning of, immediately, go to the dictionary and find out. Else you might well miss the single most important message in the book!"

I believe this advice could indeed apply to every aspect of our lives.
